The New York City Marathon 2024 is the last of the six World Marathon majors of the year and is all set to take place on November 3. With a stacked line-up in all of the available distances, the stage is set for some incredible performances.
There will be several Olympians in contention for the marathon title including the reigning Olympic gold medalist and defending champion Tamirat Tola. He will be looking to become the first man since Geoffrey Mutai to win back-to-back titles at the event.
Bashir Abdi, Evans Chebet, Conner Mantz, and Clayton Young will be some of the other runners to watch out for in the men’s elite field.
Hellen Obiri will be the overwhelming favorite in the women's elite field. She became the first woman in history to win the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon in a single year in 2023. She defended her Boston Marathon title earlier this year and will have her eyes glued on winning the NYC Marathon title.
Facing Obiri will be Sharon Lokedi, who won the race on her debut in 2022. While Lokedi hasn't been able to replicate her performances in recent years, she finished fourth at the Paris Olympics and could provide a tough challenge for Obiri. Sheila Chepkirui, Tirunesh Dibaba, Vivian Cheruiyot, and Dakotah Lindwurm are some of the other female runners to watch out for in the elite field.
