16-year-old Quincy Wilson opened up about being the youngest male US Track and Field athlete to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. The American athlete expressed his gratitude and weighed in on how his life had changed tremendously in the past year.
Wilson rose to prominence in the track World after his performance at the New Balance Indoor Championships, where he broke a 20-year-old long standing 400m High School record. With steady improvements and multiple personal bests throughout the season, the teenager emerged as one of the United States' top junior athletes, and he competed at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.
The yongster broke the U18 400m World record in back-to-back appearances in Round 1 as well as in the semifinals of the Olympic Trials, and ultimately finished sixth in the final.
This was enough to find him a place in the men's 4x400m relay team at the Paris Olympics. Quincy Wilson won his first Olympic medal in his debut appearance in the men's 4x400m relay, making him the youngest male US track and field athlete to win the gold medal at the quadrennial games.
He spoke about handling the emotions of winning such a major honor in an interview with NBC news. Speaking about the Olympic medal and reflecting on his journey from a high school athlete to winning the gold medal at the pinnacle games, Wilson said:
“I didn’t know it was going to be as heavy. When I put it around my neck, tears almost came down my eyes. Last year, sitting in this school, I wouldn’t even think that I would be in the Olympics getting a gold medal. Knowing that I am a gold medal Olympic champion, the youngest to ever do it, means a lot."
Quincy Wilson shares an inspirational message after receiving a major honor
Quincy Wilson spoke on being named the USATF Youth Athlete of the Year for his incredible performances throughout the 2024 season. The youngster expressed his thoughts on facing self-doubt and fear while trying to achieve a major milestone in life.
"I want to take a moment to speak to everyone out there who's faced doubt or fear. One of my most important lessons I've learned is to never ever doubt yourself. Believe in yourself. It's the foundation of everything, whether it's sports, life, or anything you pursue. There were many times when I didn't know if I could make it, but I learned that if you trust yourself, keep working, and stay focused on your goals, the possibilities are endless," Wilson said.
Furthermore, he shed light on the importance of self-belief and he urged people to keep working tirelessly towards their goals.
