Reigning team all-around Olympic silver medalist, Jordan Chiles' fans expressed their disappointment as the gymnast missed out on qualifying for the all-around finals of the Paris Olympics. This is due to the "two per country" rule of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
23-year-old Chiles is one of the leading medal contenders for the United States at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Chiles impressed the fans with a splendid performance at the US Olympic Trials, where she finished third with an all-around score of 111.425. At her first outing in the Paris Games on Sunday, July 28, Chiles again replicated the same performance in the qualifying rounds, placing third with an all-around total of 56.065.
She closely followed her compatriots, Simone Biles and Suni Lee, who finished first and second in the qualifying rounds with scores of 59.566 and 56.132, respectively. Chiles scored 14.216 in the vault event, 14.266 on uneven bars, 13.600 on the balance beam apparatus, and 13.866 on the floor exercise. Despite her stunning performance, the Oregon native had to miss out on the all-around finals of the French event, as only the top two gymnasts from each country or National Olympic Committee are eligible to participate in the finals.
Fans were not happy, as they criticized the rule for being too stringent. One fan tweeted:
"2 per country rule is garbage. Sorry everyone on my team is better than yours? seems like a skill issue. Jordan Chiles should be in the all around final."
Replying to the tweet, another fan commented:
"Factssss"
Comparing the rule with swimming and track events, another fan questioned:
"Truly trash. Imagine if they did this in swimming or track ?!!!"
Agreeing to the statement a fan wrote "Exactly."
Here are some other reactions from fans:
"normies finding out about this lmao" writes a fan.
"Agreed. And I’m gonna say it: if someone gets 3rd in US trials in swimming but makes another event we should be able to put them in that event they didn’t “make” they’re already on the roster let them swim whatever they want provided they’ve got Olympic QT let us sweep once plz" a fan tweeted.
"Intellectually I understand and respect the two per country rule but as an obnoxious American for two weeks every four years I say USA USA USA USA" another fan commented.
Jordan Chiles vies for an individual medal as the United States tops the qualifying rounds at the Paris Olympics
Jordan Chiles and her USA gymnastics team put on a show in their maiden outing at the Paris Olympics. The American roster recorded a score of 172.296 to top the Subdivision 2 round on Sunday, beating Italy and China as the two nations finished second and third, scoring 166.861 and 166.628 respectively.
On the other hand, Chiles is eyeing her first individual Olympic medal. She is currently placed second on the floor exercise apparatus with a score of 13.866 and is only behind Simone Biles, who is leading the standings with 14.660.
However, there are several rounds left in the competition, and Chiles looks poised to maintain her impressive run for the rest of the Paris Olympics.
