Sha'Carri Richardson first rose to prominence with her blistering 100m run at the 2019 NCAA Division I Championships in a time of 10.75s. She qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but was not picked in the USA track and field squad for the quadrennial games after testing positive for marijuana and receiving a one-month ban.
However, she has since emerged as one of the dominant sprinters of the present era. With the Paris Olympics approaching, where she is seen as a genuine medal-contender, let’s explore Richardson's top three accomplishments from the period between the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
#3 Sha'Carri Richardson is a two-time national champion in the women’s 100m
Richardson recently claimed her second national title in the women’s 100m after securing the first position at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. She clocked a world-leading time of 10.71s in the finals of the women’s 100m at the trials to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will also be her debut Olympic Games.
In 2023, she won her first US title at the 2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she clocked 10.82s to win the 100m event. She finished ahead of Brittany Brown and Tamari Davis, who ran times of 10.90s and 10.99s.
#2 Sha'Carri Richardson is a two-time world champion and has won a bronze medal
In her career at the World Athletics Championships, Richardson has won two gold medals in the 100m and women’s 4x100m relay event, and a bronze in the 200m event. She accomplished this during the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest.
She won the gold in 100m in a time of 10.65s, finishing ahead of Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson (10.72s) and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.77s). In the 200m, Richardson clinched the bronze in a time of 21.92s. Meanwhile, she played a crucial role in the United States’ gold-medal triumph in the 4x100m relay, running the anchor leg as the team recorded a 41.03s.
#1 Sha'Carri Richardson clocked fifth-fastest time in the 100m to win gold medal at World Athletics Championships 2023
Her gold-medal performance in the 100m of 10.65s at the 2023 World Athletics Championships was the joint-fifth fastest time in the distance.
This performance by Richardson ranks her alongside the likes of Marion Jones and Jackson, who achieved these times at the 1998 World (Continental) Cup and the 2023 Jamaican Championships finals, respectively.
