Team USA's boxing squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics features multiple young boxers, including Joshua Edwards, Jajaira Gonzalez, Jahmal Harvey, Omari Jones, Jennifer Lozano, Morelle McCane, Roscoe Hill, and Alyssa Mendoza. The boxing events will commence on July 27.
Many elite athletes have proved their prospects as gold-medal-winning candidates. On that note, let's take a look at five American boxers who are likely to achieve a medal in Paris.
#5 Omari Jones will make his debut at the Games at Paris Olympics
Omari Jones has displayed his prospects as an Olympic medal winner after becoming the first American boxer to qualify for the Paris Olympics at the 2024 World Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament 1 held in Italy in March.
He pinned India's Nishant Dev 4-1 in the final round to clinch the Olympic berth in the men's 71kg category. Jones displayed his exceptional prowess at the competition by defeating Moslem Maghsoudi, and Mohamed Rachem 5-0 in the previous rounds. Jones secured a silver medal in the welterweight event at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships.
#4 Jahmal Harvey
Jahmal Harvey will compete in the Featherweight category at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Owing to his gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships, Harvey secured a spot to compete in the French capital.
He overpowered Cuba's Saidel Horta in the 57kg category. Harvey showed his dominance in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds after knocking Keevin Allicock and Luiz Gabriel Oliveira. The 21-year-old is also a gold medalist in the Featherweight category of the 2021 World Championships.
#3 Jajaira Gonzalez
Jajaira Gonzalez will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics as a promising athlete, vying to secure a medal. She will carry her previous Olympics experience as a valuable asset. Gonzalez competed in the 2014 Youth Olympics in China, securing a gold medal.
After finishing second at the 2016 Olympics trials, Gonzalez stepped away from the sport briefly before making a return ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. After clinching a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships in the 60kg category, she punched her direct ticket to the Games.
#2 Roscoe Hill
Roscoe Hill earned his Olympic spot at the Boxing Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand. Hailing from a flourishing legacy of boxing, Hill will compete in Paris to earn his first Olympic medal, a dream he potentially shared with his father, who trained former professional boxer, George Foreman.
Hill stood third in the 2018 USA Boxing Elite National Championships. Falling short of qualifying for the Tokyo Games after settling in third place at the Trials, Hill has come a long way to prove himself a worthy opponent for the Olympic gold medal in the 51kg category.
#1 Joshua Edwards
Joshua Edwards booked his ticket for the Paris Games by clinching a gold medal in the 92kg+ category at the 2023 Pan-Am Games in Santiago. The 24-year-old will compete at the Paris Olympics in the men's super heavyweight division
