Jordan Chiles received a signature diamond-encrusted bronze stopwatch from rapper Flavor Flav, who had promised to replace the medal the gymnast lost after the Paris Olympics. Social fans were in awe of the heartwarming moment on stage during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Following her team's appeal, Chiles was upgraded from fifth to bronze in the floor exercise final at the 2024 Olympics. However, after the Romanian Gymnastics Federation applied for a re-examination, CAS ordered the Olympian to return her bronze.
After the unfortunate event, American rapper Flavor Flav customized a signature diamond-encrusted bronze stopwatch, a consolation for Jordan Chiles. At the recent MTV Video Music Awards, he honored the Olympian with the custom-made medal when both took the stage for presenting Best Collaboration.
"Jordan, I know they tried to take your medal away from you, but you know what, I got you something that they can't take away from you," said the rapper while placing the priceless stopwatch around her neck.
Fans, who were present in the venue, erupted in cheers and Jordan Chiles shook her head in disbelief.
On witnessing the heartwarming moment, social fans hailed Flavor Flav, who is the sponsor for the United States Olympic women's water polo team.
One fan lauded the 65-year-old for sticking to his word.
"He did the thing! A man of his word," the fan commented.
Another fan called him a 'feminist icon' for his efforts and contributions.
"FEMINIST ICON," the fan said.
Another fan said:
"Protect him at all costs."
Here are some of the other reactions:
"Flav is so real for this. Mad respect," a fan tweeted.
"flavor flav is the people’s king," another comment read.
"Not me crying! Who knew Flavor Flav would be a sort of godfather for the 2024 Olympics?" commented a fan.
Jordan Chiles on losing her medal - "It's about my skin color"
Jordan Chiles was a special guest at the Forbes Power Women Summit, where she reflected on the Olympic bronze medal saga and revealed the reason behind the forfeiting.
"The biggest thing that was taken from me was," she paused and continued, "it was the recognition of who I was. Not just my sport, but the person I am." (via USA Today)
She added:
“It’s not about the medal. It's about my skin color. It's about the fact there were things that have led up to this position of being an athlete. And I felt like everything has been stripped. I felt like when I was back in 2018 where I did lose the love of the sport, I lost it again.”
The two-time Olympic medalist will join her US compatriot Simone Biles at the Gold Over America tour, scheduled to begin on September 16, 2024.
