Noah Lyles is confident that the USA Track and Field Team will dominate the world at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The world champion's claim comes after the USA topped the medals tally at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
The USA boasts some of the best athletes in the world, Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson, Ryan Crouser, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. All of these track and field stars were among the gold medalists in Budapest last year, with the American hurdler setting a world record as well.
Lyles won the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m gold while Richardson took gold in the 100m and 4x100m relay along with a bronze medal in the 200m. Ryan Crouser won his 2nd World title in the Shot put and McLaughlin-Levrone broke her own 400m hurdles record for the third time in two years. USA also won the gold in the men's 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay.
Speaking in an interview with Digital Journal, Lyles claimed that Team USA’s performances over the last couple of years had made them confident heading into the Paris Olympics 2024.
"If you’ve looked at the past two World Championships after Tokyo, the U.S. had had strong dominance in the gold medal stand, and on the podium as a whole,” Lyles said.
Expressing confidence in the team, he added:
"We’ve been grabbing medals that we are supposed to, and we’ve been grabbing medals on top of that, so that’s very reassuring. After 2022, we’ve been sweeping everything and that has made us feel good, especially going into the Olympics. I don’t think we are losing anybody… I think we are gaining year by year"
Although Lyles can't control the performance of his fellow Americans, he has vowed to go for four gold medals in Paris, a feat not even Usain Bolt could accomplish. Only time will tell if he can achieve this feat, but as of now, Lyles’ participation in the 4x400m relay, his fourth potential medal-winning event, is not guaranteed.
Noah Lyles faces backlash over his last-minute addition to the 4x400m relay team at the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024
For Noah Lyles to achieve the dream of winning four gold medals at the Paris Olympics 2024, he intends to run the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay. While the world champion is a sure shot for the first three events, his place on the 4x400m relay team is in doubt.
In a bid to make his case for the 4x400m relay team, Lyles was included in the Team USA at the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024. However, Lyles was the slowest of the four on the day, with USA managing to win a silver medal. Additionally, he has only run in the event one other time in his professional career, the 2023 Florida Relays.
Several American sprinters expressed their discontent with USATF's decision to add Noah Lyles to the 4x400m relay team. 2022 world champion Fred Kerley accused the organization of favoritism towards Lyles. However, the 26-year-old maintains his stance of pursuing the Paris quadruple.
