Sunisa 'Suni' Lee added another feather to her cap with her remarkable performance at the Paris Olympics which was held earlier this year. However, the 21-year-old gymnast's path to Olympic glory was far from easy.

In 2023, Lee shocked everyone when she announced that she was ending her collegiate career. It later turned out that she was compelled to take this decision due to a kidney ailment, that nearly finished her career.

In a conversation with Fox News Chicago after the Paris Olympics, Lee recounted how the disease impacted her previous season. In her words,

"It was very difficult. I mean always thought that I was super healthy so waking up one day not really knowing what was going on was really scary and of course not being able to do the one thing I love which was gymnastics at that time. It was really difficult because, at that time, I was in college as well so I was away from my family, I didn't have my regular doctors and just had to find like the right healthcare team and support system was really important to me."

Despite her condition, Lee did not give up, and made several changes to her lifestyle as well as her training. She persevered and qualified for the Olympic trials, ultimately securing her spot at the Paris Olympics. Lee shared her emotions in an heartfelt Instagram post after qualifying for the Paris Olympics, writing:

"This comeback was so much more than my return to elite gymnastics. It was me proving to myself that I can overcome hard things, and to hopefully inspire others to never let life’s setbacks stop you from going after your dreams."

Suni Lee went on to play a crucial role in the USA's team all-around gold medal victory at the Paris Olympics. Additionally, she secured a bronze medal in the individual all-around event.
