The women's 400m hurdles semifinals at the Paris Olympics delivered unforgettable races, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Femke Bol were the standout performers of the night, and proved why they are the two best 400m hurdlers of this generation.
Kicking things off in semifinal 1 was Rushell Clayton with an electric run. The Jamaican was the fastest woman on the track going into this race, and she lived up to the expectations. The two-time World Championships bronze-medalist started fast out of the blocks, and kept up that intensity to cross the finish line in a time of 53.00s.
Behind Clayton, the battle for second was between America’s Jasmine Jones and South Africa's Zeney Geldenhuys. Jones had a strong run in the first-half, but Geldenhuys soon caught up. However, the American crossed the finish line first in a time of 53.83s.
Semifinal 2 of the Paris Olympics women's 400m hurdles was perhaps the most anticipated race of the night, as it featured reigning Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. The American had an easy start to her campaign in the heats, and absolutely dominated the Stade De France track in her semifinal. Running with her trademark effortlessness, she stopped the clock at 52.13s.
Meanwhile, this race also gave the home crowd something to cheer about, as France's Louise Maraval booked her place in the final with a time of 53.83s on the back of a late resurgence.
Last but not least, the Netherlands' Femke Bol was the star of the show in semifinal 3. After the drama of a restart, the Dutch athlete displayed exemplary form and focus, gliding through the lap without exerting herself to clock a time of 52.57s. Behind her, America's Anna Cockrell finished second with a time of 52.90s.
