Former American gymnast Aly Raisman recently voiced her appreciation and support for the Texas Christian University football coach who conducted a lesson to his team about consent. Since retiring from the sport, Raisman has been a voice of change in gymnastics and a strong advocate for women's rights.
Following her decorated gymnastics career where she won six Olympic medals and four World Championship medals, the Needham, Massachusetts native took retirement from the sport in 2020. Besides her gymnastics endeavors, Raisman was one of over a hundred gymnasts who spoke out and testified against the US women's national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar for sexual abuse. As a result of their testimonies, Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison after he pleaded guilty.
Since then, Raisman has remained steadfast in promoting mental and women's safety and shares her views on public platforms to advocate for these causes. This was evident in a recent Instagram video where Aly Raisman shared a video of Kaz Kazadi, an Assistant Athletics Director, Football Human Performance at TCU, as he taught his protégés about women's consent.
"Let's finish on this, consent. Remember we went over consent? You're with the young lady; she has to consent to every act. So if you were in the car with her and something went down in the car, that does not mean that something has to go down at the apartment, coach Kazadi said (via Common Entertainment's Instagram post).
"If y'all did something in the car, that does not mean something else has to happen. That next day you cannot assume that it is okay to send a **** pic or something like that," he added.
Sharing the video on her Instagram story, Aly Raisman wrote:
"YES. WE NEED MORE OF THIS. EVERYWHERE!!!!! Thank you coach!"
"It's very emotional for me to hear a young kid talk about..." - Aly Raisman on being an idol for young girls
In a February 2024 interview with USA Today, Aly Raisman shared that she feels truly happy when young girls approach her to express how her book made them aware of the abuse.
"I've had gymnasts who are 4 years old come up to me and say that they read my book with their mom or their grandmother. It's very emotional for me to hear a young kid talk about that because they say it with such confidence. That definitely gives me hope and courage to keep talking about what I wish I had known and some of the signs to look out for. I feel grateful to have the platform to do that," she said (via USA Today).
Raisman authored a book titled 'From My Head to My Toes', which educates kids about consent.
