The men's 110m hurdles opening round at the Paris Olympics was another show of pure dominance by reigning World Champion Grant Holloway. Behind the American, there were some surprises in the qualifiers, keeping the anticipation up as we approach the semifinals.

For Holloway, this outing at Stade De France is a chance at redemption, an opportunity to claim the gold he missed out on four years ago, and he certainly looks up to the task. Racing in Heat 5, the American got a strong start and kept the momentum going, clocking a 13.01s. This made him the fastest man of the day, with his closest competitor being Japan's Rachid Muratake who ran 13.22s in Heat 1.

While Holloway thrived, his rival and 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hansle Parchment was unable to bring the same energy to the beginning of his campaign at the Paris Olympics. The Jamaican raced in Heat 3, clocking a 13.43 (.430) that was just enough to save him from the repechage rounds, propelling him to the semifinals on the basis of time and not finish.

Additionally, Heat 3 also featured Daniel Roberts, the 2023 World Championships bronze-medalist, who struggled in a similar manner to Parchment. The American clocked a 13.43 (.423) making him the 15th fastest man of the day, certainly not a title he’ll be happy with.

Elsewhere, in a bizarre sight, Robert's teammate Freddie Crittenden completed his race in a leisurely 18.27s, later revealing he chose to do so to avoid injury. Crittenden will get a chance to make it to the semifinals via the repechage rounds.

Outside of Hollywood and his dominance at the Paris Olympics, other standout athletes of the day included Japan's Rachid Muratake and Switzerland’s Jason Joseph. The two athletes have never medaled on the global stage before, but are ranked second and third going into the men's 110m hurdles semifinals, after their performances of 13.22s and 13.26s.
