Simone Biles opened up about a scary moment that she experienced during the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was after she suffered a calf injury and left the floor limping on her left leg during the team qualifications at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Despite the injury, Biles had an excellent journey, earning three gold medals in the women's gymnastics team, all-around, and vault events. She earned a silver medal in the floor exercise. She became the most decorated American gymnast in Summer Games history, with seven gold, two silver, and two bronze medals from her three visits, surpassing Shannon Miller, who had two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
In a recent interaction with Self.com, Simone Biles opened up on her calf issue that she sustained during the Paris Olympics. She recounted her experience, adding:
“As soon as I got off the floor, I was like, ‘People are gonna think I’m quitting again.’”
She further added:
“Ugh. It was so annoying. And I think that’s what irritated me the most.”
In addition, Biles mentioned how she felt that her calf injury in Paris was a “déjà vu” moment. This was owing to her experience at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021. At the Tokyo Olympics, Biles opted out of numerous events, including all-around, vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise, because of a mental condition called "Twisties" in gymnastics.
Simone Biles explains the Twisties experienced during the Tokyo Olympics in non-gymnastics terms
Simone Biles explained the Twisties she suffered during the Tokyo Olympics. On the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, she spoke on what the Twisties are, adding (starting at 5:19):
“If I had to explain it in gymnastics terms, it might not make sense. But, it's basically like your mind and your body is at a disconnect. Your body is going to try to do something and your mind is going to be like, ‘No, you're not doing this work.’”
She also explained the condition in non-gymnastics terms, saying:
“The best way I could describe it is every day you drive a car. If one day you woke up and you had no idea how to drive a car, your legs are going crazy. You have no control over your body that's kind of how it feels like you've been doing something for so long and you now no longer have control. Terrifying. It's terrifying because we're in a car without any protection.”
Biles took home the bronze in the balance beam event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Notably, this was her consecutive bronze on the apparatus at the Summer Games.
