The inaugural season of Athlos NYC has just come to an end. The unique female-only track and field meet was held at the Icahn Stadium in New York City on September 26.
Initially referred to as '776 Invitational', Athlos NYC is named after the Greek word for Athletics. 36 athletes from all around the world competed in six events, with a top prize money of $60, 000 for the winner of each event. Even someone who finished last amongst the six participants would take home at least $2,500.
The event saw some excellent performances, as well as some major upsets. Some events saw the champions extending their dominance, like in 400m, where Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic won yet another event after the Paris Olympics and the Diamond League with the Athlos NYC meet.
On the other hand, former Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico, who was forced to settle for the bronze medal, has extended her dominance after winning the Wanda Diamond League 2024.
She won the 100m hurdles event at the Athlos NYC with a timing of 12.36 seconds, leaving behind Olympic champion Masai Russell, who managed to finish third with a timing of 12.44 seconds.
However, the major highlight of this event was Olympic bronze medalist Brittany Brown, who stunned everyone, including her own teammate Gabby Thomas, to win the 200m event.
Brown gave some tough competition to Thomas throughout the race, until she edged her out at the finish line, clocking 22.18 seconds overall. Gabby Thomas clocked 22.21 seconds to finish as the runner up. Interestingly, Brittany Brown had finished runners-up in the 100m event at Athlos NYC only an hour before this event, which was won by Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith from the Ivory Coast.
