After an incredible run at the World Team Trials, Jordan Burroughs has confirmed that he will be in action at the World Championships. The competition is scheduled for the tail end of October and will mark the American’s 10th appearance at the global event.
For Burroughs, 2024 has brought its fair share of ups and downs. The former Olympic champion failed to qualify for the 2024 Games and was on the brink of retirement before he announced that he'd be competing at the World Team Trials in Omaha.
Now, after his victorious run in Nebraska, the 36-year-old has confirmed that he will indeed be competing at the World Championships, sharing snaps of his training on Instagram with the caption:
“It's October. That means it's World Championships month! We'll compete in Tirana, Albania October 30-31! Back to work!”
After the disappointment he was dealt with at the Olympic Trials, Jordan Burroughs made an incredible comeback at the World Team Trials. Competing in the 79 kg category, the American downed Sam Beckett 13-0 in his opening round before getting the better of Levi Haines in the quarterfinals. Next, he beat Alex Dieringer to set up a summit clash with Chance Marstellar, whom he defeated 3-0, 6-3 in a best-of-three series.
After the Trial, Burroughs opened up on what his meant to him, saying:
“I've got a lot to fight for. A lot of people who count on me, rely upon me, not only to win, but to be at my best. Showing that you can persevere, you can be resilient in any circumstances. You know, this isn't the team I planned on making when I started this year. I wanted to be an Olympian in Paris, and I found myself on the fall. So a much different experience than I would have hoped for, but this is a testament to God's grace.”
