Iowa State wrestling team's head coach Kevin Dresser claimed Iowa Hawkeyes' wrestling team at 2024 Cy-Hawk was the best he had faced in his seven years with the Cyclones. The Hawkeyes won the annual dual 21-15, extending their winning streak to 20 years.
Iowa State put up a good fight but only managed to win four of the six bouts, earning them 44 match points over Hawkeyes 72. Adrian Meza, Zach Redding, Anthony Echemendia, and Yonger Bastida were able to register wins for Cyclones at the annual dual.
Angelo Ferrari made his debut for the Hawkeyes at the Cy-Hawk debut, winning 8-2 over No.15 Evan Bockman. Stephen Buchanan, Patrick Kennedy, Michael Caliendo, Kyle Parco, and Drake Ayala were other wrestlers winning their duals for the Hawkeyes.
Following the annual dual, Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser hailed the Hawkeyes team as the best he had seen in his seven-year tenure with the Cyclones. Speaking in a press conference, he said:
"I mean, in the seven years that I've been at Iowa State now, that's the best Iowa team that we face, by far. You know, so credit to Coach Brands and the donor base. I mean, that's the world we live in. So let's just say it, right, congratulations to all of the people involved in the program because they have put together a heck of a team right there," he said
Dresser added that even freshmen wrestlers of the Hawkeyes were impressive.
"I mean, you look at some of the guys on that team that are kind of newcomers, those dudes can wrestle," he added
Dresser is a former 142 lbs NCAA champion of the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1986. He joined Iowa State as their wrestling coach in 2017 after a decade-long tenure at Virginia Tech from 2006 to 2017.
"Better than I thought" - Kevin Dresser all praise of Angele Ferrari
Iowa State wrestling head coach Kevin Dresser was all praise of the Hawkeyes' Angelo Ferrari, who's the brother of WWE star AJ Ferrari, following his win at 2024 Cy-Hawk meet.
"I was surprised. I knew he was good but he's little better than I thought," he said when asked if he was surprised to see Ferrari enter the mat
Ferrari was up against Evan Bockman and asserted his dominance right at the start of the dual with an early takedown. He held onto his gritty defense and swift leg attacks before being handed an 8-2 decision victory. Speaking after the match, he said:
“I don’t think I wrestled my best match. I think there’s a lot of finishes I could have gotten. And the way I think of it is … on my worst night, I’ve still got to be the best in the country … But if I make those adjustments and keep getting better, I can kill these guys."
Ferrari is among the top wrestling prospects in 2024 and is among the favorites to win the 184 lbs NCAA Championship.
