Fans recently reacted to Shilese Jones' stumbling during the vault warmup on Day 2 of the 2024 U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials. The last leg of the U.S. women's selection procedure for the Paris Olympics is scheduled at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Day 2 of the trials featured the beginning of the women's competition with the likes of Jones, Simone Biles, Suni Lee, and Jordan Chiles displaying their skills on individual apparatus. However, Shilese Jones took a fierce tumble during the vault warmup while executing a double-twisting Yurchenko.
She was assisted off the mat by her coach Sarah Korngold and the medical team. Gymnastic Now shared the update with the fans, who expressed their disbelief and discontent towards the unfortunate turn of events.
"Cancel Olympic Trials, I can’t do this anymore," expressed one of the fans.
"This is devastating," wrote another fan.
Displeased by the incident, one of the fans suggested FIG reduce the difficulty, stating the number of injuries as unworthy.
"The FIG needs to scale back the difficulty at this point. It’s not worth so many injuries every year."
Highlighting the injury sustained by Skye Blakely during the podium training, a fan voiced their concern on the quality of equipment used at the Trials.
"This cannot be happening. Is the equipment bad? How are 2 girls who were meant to be on the team getting injured back to back????"
Here are a few more reactions:
"I’ll never recover from this," wrote a fan.
"Cancel it. The whole thing. We'll try again after Shilese is medically cleared. There's just no point now," expressed another fan.
"OH. NO. I hope she’s not seriously hurt," one of the fans conveyed.
Shilese Jones entered the U.S. Olympic Trials after withdrawing from the Xfinity Championships due to a shoulder injury
Shilese Jones entered the 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials as one of the favorite athletes after withdrawing from the U.S. Championships due to a shoulder injury.
Jones issued a petition to compete in the Trials to earn her first Olympic quota. During the 2024 Core Hydration Classic, held on May 17 and 18, the American gymnast sustained an injury in her shoulder. The injury later forced her to withdraw from the U.S. Xfinity Championships.
However, Shilese Jones' petition to compete at the Olympic Trials was accepted after meeting the criteria of competing at the World Championships twice and competing in two events at the last U.S. Classic.
