Gabby Douglas' return to Gymnastics after an eight-year-long hiatus was one of the most anticipated moments of the season. The 28-year-old, Simone Biles and Suni Lee were all set to compete at the U.S Core Hydration Classic 2024.
However, disaster struck Douglas’s uneven bars routine took an unexpected turn. Her bar routine fell apart after she lost control but still managed to get back and remounted which ignited cheers from the crowd.
However, she was visibly upset after the maneuver, and it was later officially announced by USA Gymnastics on their social media handle that the former Olympic gold medalist had withdrawn from the Core Hydration Classic.
The news upset her fans immensely and they took to X to voice their opinion about Douglas' withdrawal from the event.
" Cancel the whole meet then <3," tweeted a fan.
"This is the worst thing ever," wrote a fan.
"I’m really very very sad," wrote another fan.
Here are some more fan reactions:
"I wonder if it's because she'd not be able to get that AA qualifying score for the Championships? If that's the case, I wish she'd still compete cause it'd be good practice... but also I really just want to see more of her competing! I just hope she's not hurt," wrote a fan.
"I’m so sorry to hear that sending positive energy to Olympic Champion," another fan chimed in.
" She started off saying she was doing this for joy… she doesn’t look like this is joyful for her. It seems like the pressure to make it is right back at the level it was. It ends up just being sad," tweeted a fan.
Gabby Douglas opens up on the reason for making a comeback
Gabby Douglas recently opened up on the reason for making a competitive comeback after an eight-year-long hiatus from gymnastics. She said that she missed the sport and did not want to finish her career on a sour note.
"I missed gymnastics and I loved it, and it ended rough for me in 2016," Douglas explained. "I didn't want to end on that note. Like regardless of the outcome, I wanted to make sure like I end on love and joy instead of like hating something that I love," Gabby Douglas told Olympics.com.
Douglas' Rio Olympics teammate Simone Biles also made her return to gymnastics after the World Championships in Antwerp. The 27-year-old won the event with an all-around score of 59.6. Biles won the Balance Beam, Floor exercise and vault events while finishing second behind Shilese Jones in uneven bars.
