Chicago Marathon 2024 Results: Ruth Chepngetich shatters women's world record, John Korir claims first Marathon Major

Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya set a new women’s world record to claim the 2024 Chicago Marathon’s title, finishing with a remarkable time of 2:09:57. On her way to the global record, she surpassed the previous mark set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa (2:11:53) at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. In the men’s section, John Korir emerged as the winner, taking home his first World Marathon Major (WMM) title.

Chepngetich dominated the race right from the beginning as she maintained a pace ahead of the world record, and ended with the same authority. With this, the 30-year-old has now won three WMM titles, all in Chicago. The event witnessed Sutume Kebede and Irine Cheptai placing second and third in the women’s race, clocking timings of 2:17:32 and 2:17:52, respectively.

Meanwhile, Korir completed the race by clocking an impressive 2:02:43, recording the sixth-fastest marathon to win the 46th edition. The 27-year-old finished ahead of Ethiopia's Mohamed Esa and the 2022 London Marathon Major champion Amos Kipruto, who achieved times of 2:04:39 and 2:04:50.

Among the American racers, CJ Albertson (2:08:17) and Susanna Sullivan (2:21:56) finished as the fastest runners in the men's and women's elite races.

Meanwhile, in the wheelchair events, multiple-time Paralympic gold medalists Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner claimed the men’s and women’s titles, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:25:54 and 1:36:12 at Chicago Marathon.
