The Shanghai Diamond League elevated every track and field fan's enthusiasm with some of the best athletes like Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley taking center stage in contention for the title.
The Men's 100m final featured Ackeem Blake, Rohan Watson, and Akani Simbine along with the two American athletes in contention for the ultimate crown. On the other hand, the women's 200m sprint will feature Sha'Carri Richardson and Tamara Clark who have their personal bests set at 21.92.
The Men's 100m featured one of the most thrilling races of the outdoor season. South Africa's athlete Akani Simbine clinched the gold medal in the 100m leading to one of the biggest upsets of the outdoor season defeating World Champion Christian Coleman and Olympic Champion Fred Kerley.
Akani Simbine crossed the finish line clocking 10.01s taking home the ultimate title. Coleman placed second clocking 10.04s taking the second place in a very close photo finish. USA's Fred Kerley placed third clocking 10.11s. Both Simbine and Coleman clocked their season's best performance at the Shanghai Diamond League in the 100m thriller.
Fans were quick to react to the upset and took to social media to share their opinion on the same. A fan took a subtle dig at Coleman's pre-race interview where he said that Usain Bolt's 100m world record could be broken.
"And Christian Coleman talking about Usain’s record can be broken," wrote a fan.
"Time for Kerley to move back to 400m. He ain't making the Olympic team in 100m. His nervous system is fried," wrote another fan.
"Talking bout the WR and can’t even execute properly… Coleman always overstriding and tightening up towards the finish line. That form of his will win him exactly 0 Olympics if he doesn’t change it. Congratulations to Simbine," chimed in another.
Here are some more fan reactions:
A fan was very critical of Fred Kerley's performance and took to X to state the same.
"Kerley has been losing a lot lately," wrote the fan.
"Nobody worried about Simbine come champs. Christian looks fine for April. Fred looks flat," chimed in another fan.
"Season openers are meant for experimenting bro not running fast, let them cook," tweeted a fan.
Christian Coleman on Usain Bolt's World Record
Christian Coleman recently opened up about the 100m World Record that has stood for over a decade set by Usain Bolt during a press conference at the Shanghai Diamond League 2024.
"It seems like the times being run, 9.58 is obviously an extraordinary time but honestly I feel like it's a lot of guys who are competing today who are not that far off, if the track gods see fit for it to happen.
Before the outdoor season, Christian Coleman had some impressive indoor performances, most notably winning gold in the 60m event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
