Coco Gauff, Ilona Maher, Anna Hall and others have reacted to Suni Lee being named in the Glamour Women of the Year class of 2024. Lee won gold as part of the US gymnastics team and bronze in the all-around and uneven bars at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Lee's journey to the Paris Olympics was marred by her kidney-related issues, which kept her out of major competitions in 2023. Despite the setback, she persevered and returned to the gymnastics mat in 2024, contributing scores on the floor exercise, balance beam, and uneven bars for the US team's first-place finish at the Paris Olympics.
Recently, the two-time Olympic gold medalist was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year alongside Taraji P. Henson, Pamela Anderson, and Sydney Sweeney, among others. Several athletes like Coco Gauff and Ilona Maher congratulated her on the monumental achievement under Glamour's Instagram post.
Tennis player Gauff reacted with a couple of heart-eyed emojis.
Ilona Maher, a US women's rugby sevens athlete, who won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, wrote:
"Yuuuuppppp!"
Lee also posted a few photos on her Instagram handle and penned a note of gratitude, writing:
"To be honored alongside such incredible women is something I could have only dreamed of. Thank you @glamourmag, I am so grateful," the caption read.
Olympic heptathlete Anna Hall also reacted to the news.
"well deserved"
The 100m hurdles champion Masai Russell also extended her appreciation with heart-eyed emojis.
Lee also won three medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, one gold, one silver, and one bronze.
Suni Lee expresses gratitude for her Paris Olympics campaign
Suni Lee was forced to spend the majority of the 2023 season on the sidelines due to a kidney issue. During her interview with Glamour, the three-time World Championships medalist talked about how grateful she is to have gotten to compete at two Olympic Games, a scope not many athletes get.
"I’m at such a better place in my life, not even just physically but mentally, to where I can accept everything that’s happened. Not many people get to come here twice and compete with the best of the best. I just felt absolutely amazing. And now I’ve learned to really take everything in, and I think that’s why I’m so happy with all of my medals."
Lee could also look to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games that will be held in Los Angeles.
