The Copenhagen Half Marathon 2024 came to an end, with Kenyans triumphing in both competitions. Sabastian Sawe won the men's event ahead of world-record holder Jacob Kiplimo while Margaret Kipkemboi won the women's event.

Sawe clocked 58:05 minutes, edging out Kiplimo, who took only four more seconds to finish his race. Kipkemboi clocked 65:11 minutes en route to her victory while runner-up Judy Kemboi clocked 65:43 minutes.

Sawe and Kipkemboi's exploits in Copenhagen will earn them €10,000 each while Kiplimo and Kemboi's runner-up finished will fetch them €6,000 each. Isaiah Lasoi and Catherine Reline Amanangole were third in the men's and women's events, respectively, and they will each fetch €4,000.

Fourth-ranked Amos Kurgat and Ftaw Zeray will each pocket €3,000 while fifth-placed Edward Cheserek and Sheila Chelangat will be paid €2,000. Kennedy Kimutai and Viola Chepngeno both finished sixth and they will each earn €1,500.

Seventh-placed finishers Ayele Dinkalem and Norway's Karoline Grovdal will fetch €1,200 each while eight-ranked Roncer Konga and Veronica Loleo will receive €1,000. Grovdal is the only non-African competitor in the Copenhagen half marathon to finish in the top eight.

There were some additional cash prizes in place, which will not be awarded. These include €5000 each for a world record and a race record, and €3,000 for a European record.

Sabastian Sawe and Margaret Kipkemboi were both close to breaking the race record, with the former missing it by four seconds while the latter missed the one in her category by only three seconds.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen was a popular name competing at the Copenhagen half marathon. However, he was unable to finish the race, eventually finishing 34th after clocking 63:13 seconds.

The Norwegian said that he ran till he was about to die, and stopped before resuming, a method he said was not smart or clever to adopt for a half marathon.

“I ran until I was about to die, and stopped, ran until I was about to die again and stopped,” Ingebrigtsen said, as quoted by The Sunday Times. “It’s probably not a very smart or clever way to run a half-marathon."

Ingebrigtsen called his performance in Copenhagen as the worst run he's ever had.

“This is the worst run I have ever had. The worst before was the cross-country race in Aarhus in 2019. It’s an insane mental and physical strain," the Norwegian said.

The 23-year-old's performance at the Copenhagen half marathon comes just a day after his victory in the 1500m event at the Brussels Diamond League final.
