Just days after expressing her willingness to trade her gold medals for the joy of motherhood, Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus stepped into a new role as a babysitter, caring for the son of her teammate Madi Wilson's son, Austin. Titmus enjoyed a successful 2024 Paris Olympics.
Following her victorious run at the Games, she spoke of her strong maternal instincts. She said that she would sacrifice all her gold medals for the chance to have a child, following a health scare. In 2023, she underwent surgery to remove a large growth from her ovary. She had been diagnosed with two benign tumors called dermoids.
She said (via news.com.au),
“I’ve always wanted to be a mum, but it probably made me realise how much I want it. I would give up every gold medal I’ve ever won to have a child. I just have such maternal instincts, and I think the fear of potentially that becoming harder by the prospect of losing the ovary was really tough. I’m so lucky that I’ve got the best mum in the world, and I just want to be that one day.”
Days after expressing a deep longing for motherhood, Titmus was seen babysitting a fellow teammate and four-time Olympic medalist Wilson's son.
Wilson announced the news of pregnancy at the Australian Cricket Awards along with her cricketer husband Matthew Short before welcoming their son in February 2024.
Titmus shared a picture of the heartwarming moment on her Instagram story. She wrote:
"Having a cuppa with Aussie. He's beautiful @madiwilson @mattshort."
Unfazed by health scare, Ariarne Titmus revelled in successful streak at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Even though she experienced a major health issue only a year before the 2024 Games, Ariarne Titmus displayed her talent and determination at the French capital.
She collected four medals in Paris, two gold and two silver. The 24-year-old defended her 400m freestyle title by holding off Summer McIntosh and the legendary Katie Ledecky. While the Australian clocked a stunning 3:57.49, the Canadian and the American recorded 3:58.37 and 4:00.86, respectively.
She also contributed to the team's efforts to grab the gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Further, she took home silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 800m freestyle after posting 1:53.27 and 8:12.29, respectively.
