Lindsey Vonn expressed disappointment after crashing during the Super-G race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy after an impressive start. The 40-year-old was racing in her 400th World Cup race after making a comeback with a titanium knee in December 2024.
Vonn was well on the way to a podium finish before losing balance on her inside left ski. She was the fifth fastest through the second checkpoint, hoping to make her 400th World Cup race memorable but fell on her left knee and registered a Did Not Finish.
The three-time Olympic medalist was dejected after the race and wrote in a post on X:
"Shit happens…. On to the next race 👉"
Vonn was unhurt after the crash and skied down the course to the finish area to thank the crowd. It marked her second fall in four days after avoiding injury on Thursday during training before finishing 20th in Saturday's downhill race.
Speaking with reporters after the crash, the 40-year-old said:
"I definitely made some mistakes on the top, but I got a little bit behind the course and tried to pull it off. Then my skis kind of clicked together and I lost my balance."
Expressing pride in racing in her 400th World Cup race, Vonn said (via ESPN):
"It means that I have been here for a long time."
The Olympic champion also added that she would break the record for most World Cup appearances by a female skier (409), which is held by Austria's Renate Goetschl.
Lindsey Vonn finds a silver lining in disappointing Cortina World Cup weekend
Lindsey Vonn raised expectations after impressive sixth and fourth-place finishes in the downhill and Super-G race last week. She, however, crashed on her first day in Cortina, the same venue where she holds a record 12 victories in the World Cup circuit.
While Vonn was feeling positive about reaching the podium over the weekend, the 40-year-old said she needed more training and that failing in Cortina had left her hungry to improve.
"I need more training, I need more time. And I think it's actually kind of a good thing that I didn't do well this weekend, because it leaves me really hungry for more and also hopefully for next year," Lindsey Vonn said (via ESPN).
Vonn will now be in action next weekend in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and will return to Cortina for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
