Dafne Schippers recently slammed Sprint docuseries producers for misinformation concerning Jamaicans and Americans winning all medals in the 100m and 200m at the 2015 and 2017 World Championships. The Dutch woman was among the athletes who competed in both events and won medals.
At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China, Schippers won a silver medal in the women’s 100m and claimed the 200m title. In the women’s 100m, Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the gold medal as the late American Torrie Bowie took bronze.
In the women’s 200m that Dafne Schippers won, the Jamaican duo of Elaine Thompson-Herah and Veronica Campbell finished second and third, respectively.
At the 2017 World Championships in London, Dafne Schippers finished third in the women’s 100m, crossing the finish line behind Bowie and Ivorian Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith, who finished first and second respectively.
The two-time world 200m champion defended her 200m title, with Ta Lou-Smith and Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo finishing second and third respectively.
After watching the Sprint Docuseries, Schippers criticized the producers, explaining that in the two championships they claimed Jamaica and Americans dominated, she was also amongst the medals.
In a post on her Instagram stories, Schippers said:
"Great to watch the documentary, a look behind the scenes, the mental pressure the hard world of sprinting, my world for almost 10 years. Now on Netflix. A bit weird where they show two races where they say Jamaicans and Americans win all the medals but these two World Champs I have achieved silver and bronze."
The Sprint docuseries features three-time world champion Noah Lyles, world 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson, two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson and Olympic Games silver medallist Gabby Thomas.
Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala, Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs, 10-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Great Britain’s fastest man Zharnel Hughes, and double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah were also in the mix. Legends Allyson Felix and Usain Bolt were also featured.
"Athletics is in my heart"- Dafne Schippers declares after landing role ahead of the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships
Dafne Schippers was announced as event director for the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships to be held at the Omnisports Arena in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands.
As quoted by Inside the Games, Dafne Schippers noted that she had given herself time to know what she wanted to do, and getting the new role would be a game changer for her.
"I have given myself a year to find out what I want to do now and where I will get new energy from. I think it's great to stay involved in this world, athletics is in my heart," Schippers said.
She added:
"This task is a great honour. Half an hour's drive from home, such a big European Championships in my own country. I'm looking forward to it. As a child, I had to be dragged inside when I played outside, so I think it is very important for children to be more active and hopefully, I can contribute to that."
The four-time European champion hung her spikes in 2023 at the age of 31 but she remains actively involved in the sport.
Injuries stagnated her career in the latter stages but she managed to compete at the Tokyo Olympics and her last race was in July 2022.
