26th European Athletics Championships - Rome 2024: Day Four
Results from day four of the 26th European Athletics Championships

Day 4 of the European Athletics Championships put forth some incredible action, both in its six finals and other qualifying rounds. Amid inspiring performances both on the track and the field, it was the men's 400m sprint that took the crown for ‘most exciting’.

The line-up for the men's 400m was impressive going into the finals, and in the end, it was Belgium's Alexander Doom who stormed to gold. On his way to the win, the reigning World Indoor Champion clocked a 44.15 to demolish the 26-year-old championship record.

In the women's 400m sprint at the European Athletics Championships, it was Natalia Kaczmarek who took gold, setting a new Polish record with a time of 48.98, making her the only woman on the field to breach the 49 seconds mark.

Behind her, Rhasidat Adeleke, who won gold earlier in Rome in the mixed 4x400m relay, settled for silver, while Lieke Klaver took bronze.

Elsewhere at the European Athletics Championships, World Champions Mondo Duplantis, Femke Bol, Karsten Warholm, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen proved exactly why they’re the best in business. Making appearances in the qualification round of their respective specialty events, all four athletes topped their heats to ensure fans get to see them in action in the finals.

Duplantis jumped a 5.60m on his first try, Bol and Warholm clocked a 54.16 and 48.47 in the women's and men's 400m hurdles with ease, and Ingebrigtsen avoided a tangle on his opening lap to win his 1500m heat with a 3:37.65.

European Athletics Championships 2024: Alexander Doom on his record-breaking runs

For Alexander Doom, this victory at the European Athletics Championships came after a strong indoor season which saw him claim the World Indoor titles in both the 400m and the 4x400m.

Speaking on how he trained for the transition from indoors to outdoors, Doom told media after the race,

“I just enjoyed running and I also enjoyed my training before this championship. I tried the high altitude training to manage this transition from indoors and everything felt in the right place.”
“I am more confident, I know how I need to start the race, what I need to do and I think I gained that kind of respect for the race and that is the main thing for me now,” he added.

In 2021, Alexander Doom was part of Belgium’s 4x400m relay team that narrowly missed out on an Olympic bronze while setting a national record. This time around, fans will be hoping to see if the sprinter can carry over this momentum to the Paris Olympics in a bid for a medal finish.
