The Grenada Invitational has all the track and field enthusiasts geared up, with the five-time Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah making her first appearance of the 2024 season. This competition is slated to be held on June 6 at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort in St. George's.
Elaine Thompson-Herah is the first female athlete and second overall to nab the 'sprint double' category at consecutive Olympics. She bagged gold medals in both 100m and 200m events at the 2016 Rio Olympics and attained the same feat in the Tokyo Olympics.
Track and field enthusiast Owenm announced the participation of Thompson-Herah on their Instagram account and added the announcement in the caption.
"🚨 Double-double 100m & 200m Olympic champion Elaine Thomson-Herah 🇯🇲 has been announced as one of the headliners at the Grenada Invitational media launch today! The meet will take place on June 6th."
Along with the Olympian, Kirani James will also be headlining the 2024 Grenada Invitational. Some other athletes eyeing the Paris Olympic qualifications such as Meleni Rodney, Kurt Felix, and Halle Hazzard will also be competing in the event. The entire list of athletes has not been released yet.
Elaine Thompson-Herah's thoughts on the Paris Olympics 2024
In 2023, Elaine Thompson-Herah parted ways with her coach Shanikie Osbourne just eight months before the Olympics before hiring Reynaldo Walcott. In an interview with Sports Max the same year, she talked about her situation in the new camp.
"It has been great, expressed the Olympian. My schedule has changed with a different system and different coach so I’m just trying to get accustomed to that and I think I’m in a good place right now and I’m happy about that."
The Jamaican athlete was injured at the start of the 2023 season. Keeping the same in mind, she said that her focus was on being at the pink of her health.
"My duty is to make sure that my body is fine-tuned and always ready for the goal. The key focus is to always stay healthy. The time doesn’t matter right now. What matters is getting through each race fit and healthy."
She further added,
"Once I have that, the time will come after. The aim is always to break a world record and defend my title."
When asked about the pressure of defending her 'sprint double' title at the Paris Olympics, the sprinter claimed that her only worry was her injury, and emphasized recovering as quickly as possible in her bid to make it to the Olympics.
"Only time I ever feel pressure is if I have an injury. The pressure is trying to wonder how can I fix this injury fast to make to the Olympics and to make it to the Olympics."
