The 2024 Athlos NYC, launched by tennis legend Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, is all set for its grand opening at the Icahn Stadium. On Thursday, September 26, the event will begin at 7:35 PM onwards ET, starting with the six-track disciplines - 100m hurdles, 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 200m, and finally culminating with a grand performance by none other than Megan Thee Stallion.
The Athlos' launch ceremony was held in April 2024 when Ohanian announced that his venture capital firm Seven Seven Six intended to invest in a professional track league exclusively for female athletes, as the Reddit co-founder believed that women’s sports deserved extensive coverage.
During the launch event of the meet, American track star Gabby Thomas was present alongside Alexis Ohanian which indicated that the two had collaborated, with the athlete being announced as the event’s inaugural competitor. Ohanian then disclosed that the 776 Invitational will be offering the largest prize money ever for a women’s exclusive competition.
The winner in each of the six disciplines will pocket $60,000, with the second and third-place athletes set to receive $25,000, and $10,000. The Athlos NYC also has prize money for the competitors finishing from fourth to sixth, with them earning $8,000, $5,000, and $2,500, respectively.
Following the announcement, many prominent names joined Athlos NYC, including three-time Olympic champion and middle-distance star Faith Kipyegon, multiple Olympic medalists Marileidy Paulino and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, and newly crowned 100m hurdles Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell, as all these notable names will take center stage at Icahn Stadium for the meet's debut.
Later, the 776 Invitational was rebranded as the Athlos NYC, and on July 27, American rapper Megan Thee Stallion was announced as the musical performer for the meet, who will close the historic night with her performance, beginning at 9:45 PM ET. She will be joined by popular DJ D-Nice.
