American track athlete and three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas opened up about the reasons for the non-involvement of her boyfriend, Spencer McManes, in her track career. This comes just a few days after Thomas' vacation in Maldives.
Thomas and McManes have been together since 2022 and the two are frequently seen together during track competitions. McManes was also in attendance at the French capital when Thomas won her first Olympic gold medal. Despite this, Thomas has kept her professional life quite separate from her personal life and doesn't include her boyfriend in her on-track endeavors.
In a recent interview, Thomas addressed the matter and revealed that her track training is a personal thing between her and her team members. She also mentioned that she doesn't like to involve her boyfriend in this, who is a good company to her outside her track life.
She said (via Huff Post):
"I wouldn’t really allow that. My training is between my team and I and my coach and I and my [physical therapist] and all of that. ... He’s a good balance. It’s good to have someone to come home to who isn’t in the track world."
With a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Yale University, Spencer McManes is currently working as a customer manager at DataGrail. He is also the owner of the brand, Kaviva which serves a kava-based non-alcoholic drink. Besides his professional corporate life, McManes has also competed as a quarterback for his university's football team.
Gabby Thomas opens up about her thoughts on chasing records in track and field
Gabby Thomas recently commented on her thoughts on going after certain records in the track field.
The Georgia native commented on her probability of going after Florence Griffith Joyner's 200m world record in the future during a recent interview. She stated that going after records in track isn't right from an athlete's perspective.
She said (via Huff Post):
"I think chasing records in our sport is one of the mistakes that you can truly make.”
Thomas, 27, is currently the fourth fastest Women's 200m sprinter of all time with a run time of 21.60 seconds. This performance came in the 200m finals of the 2023 USA Championships which she eventually won. She was just 0.26 seconds behind Florence Griffith Joyner's world record run time (21.34 seconds).
