Gretchen Walsh broke the American record in the women's 100m backstroke at the recently held Florida Gators vs Virginia Cavaliers SCM Dual Meet by clocking 54.89 seconds. She surpassed Olivia Smoliga's 55.04-second time set in 2020.

During an interview with Swimswam after the race, she asserted confidence in achieving more success in the event in the future.

"Leading into this meet I didn't look at any of my records but just kind of wanted to see what I could do," Walsh said. "We suited up today wearing racing suits and I just wanted to swim as fast like for our team, so I was happy with that time, but I obviously didn't know I had done it until after the race so that was a surprise."

She added:

"And then I had the 100 back, I also broke an American record in that. Once again I didn't know what the time was. I think I'm capable of more than that race."

Gretchen Walsh also set a new American record in 50m freestyle by clocking 23.10 seconds.
