American alpine ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin recently shared an update about her return to World Cup skiing as she recovers from her crash at Killington in November.
Shiffrin was competing in her fourth race of the 2024-25 season in the giant slalom event when she had this mishap, from which she is currently recovering. Additionally, she had to undergo surgery for the major injuries she suffered during the crash.
Shiffrin took to her X handle to inform her fans about her fitness. She stated that she has started her gym sessions and spent some time on the snow. Additionally, the 29-year-old also mentioned that she is looking forward to sharing some good news with her fans and also thanked them for being patient with her. She wrote:
"We’re still working hard in the gym and starting to get some work done on snow now as well! So many of you have asked when I’ll be able to return to racing—I’m hoping to have some good news soon! Thank you for your support and your patience."
Further replying to a fan about her recovery, Shiffrin answered:
"Not fully…but getting closer!"
Notably, Shiffrin started her new season with impressive results, winning two of the three races she took part in before the crash. Similar to Mikaela Shiffrin, her fiance and two-time Olympic medalist Aleksander Kilde is also out of the slopes as he recovers from the crash he suffered last January.
US ski head coach shares comment about Mikaela Shiffrin's fitness
American ski women's team's head coach Paul Kristofic recently opened up about Mikaela Shiffrin's fitness.
In an interview, Kristofic said not many ski athletes have faced the type of injury that Shiffrin is dealing with. He also mentioned that the path to fitness has been quite complicated due to the nature of the injury. He said (via AP News):
"Things are moving along. It’s an injury I don’t think many people have ever dealt with. So it’s been complicated in a way to ensure she’s actually physically ready during the healing process and improving that way because of the nature of the injury. It’s a moving target."
During the interview, Paul Kristofic also shared that the US team's therapist, Regan Dewhirst is constantly monitoring Shiffrin and the doubt over the skier's World Cup-level fitness is still not cleared.
