Jamaican Olympian Junelle Bromfield has been vocal about being bullied online for her skin and her relationship with the USA's 100m Olympic champion, Noah Lyles. She recently penned a note on her experiences while taking a dig at critics and urging people to bring about a change in online interactions.
Bromfield says she has been increasingly targeted online since Lyles appeared in an interview with Track News World in July this year, where he revealed he had some inside information about a few Jamaican track and field athletes' Olympic campaigns, as Bromfield had told him about some of his potential contenders.
"Junelle being Jamaican and having trained in MVP, I have been getting the drama from the Jamaican camp at least five years now," he said. "There is a lot of times I make references about Jamaicans... I know information that other people don't."
Bromfield took to her Instagram story to post a write-up addressing criticism she has faced lately.
"There is no excuse to be colorist! I was bullied for almost two months, and now I have spoken up," Junelle Bromfield said. "'She is playing a victim, she is digging.' We already forgotten about that. Life does not work that way, and I pray you guys talk to your little dark skin family members better. Because when you forget, they won't."
Bromfield had shared a similar message in an Instagram post a few days ago.
"I have been getting cyber-bullied for weeks, and when it gets talked about, I’m a 'liar' because no Jamaican was coming for my features. I could go off ranting, but I’m just here to tell all the girls/women on my profile that you’re beautiful no matter your shade, shape, or size, and for the little black girls, don’t wait on anybody to tell you that you're beautiful to believe it 👸🏿❤️ " Junelle Bromfield said.
Lyles had also shown support for his girlfriend in an Instagram post a few days earlier.
Noah Lyles voices support for girlfriend Junelle Bromfield amid online 'bullying'
Noah Lyles shared an image of Junelle Bromfield in her Jamaican track jersey along with a note in the caption on Instagram last week.
"I just want to say how incredibly proud I am of my GF and give her the flowers she deserves now 💐" he said. "She has been through so much in her life that I could never imagine fighting through. Beyond that, she is a survivor, 2x Olympian, Olympic medalist, Multi world championship medalist, and has been representing Jamaica on the world stage since she was 8 years old.
"But the most impressive thing I’ve seen recently is how she’s dealt with the pure disrespect and hatred towards her from her own country. This woman has been attacked by people who have never met her, heard her name before, never seen her smile, or heard what she believes in. But she keeps moving forward knowing that God will always make a way. That's why God keeps blessing her!"
Lyles and Bromfield have discussed their relationship publicly on several occasions and are often seen voicing support for each other on social media. They started dating in 2022 and are one of the most successful couples in the professional track and field community.
