Noah Lyles and Junelle Bromfield are one of track and field's most famous couples. The duo often share insights of their life with fans, but the Jamaican recently faced a torrent of hate on the internet, and she’s now opened up on what it is like to deal with that.
Bromfield initially received hate after Lyles made comments saying he often got inside information about the Jamaican track and field scene, saying he ‘knows information other people don't’. Jamaican track and field fans were left irked at the comments, with some labeling Bromfield a ‘traitor’ amongst other things.
For the 400m runner, the hate only got worse after her Paris Olympics campaign, where she missed out on a medal after a semifinals finish in the 400m, and a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m mixed relay. Now, in an interview with Simone Clarke on ‘Simone Soul Sessions’, the World Championships bronze-medalist detailed the extent of the online abuse she faced, saying,
“They came for my mother and my family. If this was 2021, when I lost my mom, I would be in a corner somewhere crying. I had to turn off my inbox because I was getting death threats from people. I'm on a different journey in life right now. Sometimes, (when) things are not going good, there's great (things) on the other side.”
Noah Lyles’ extends his support as Junelle Bromfield opens up about facing colorism
Noah Lyles' girlfriend has previously opened up about facing colorism on the internet, and the American was quick to show his support for his partner. Taking to Instagram, Bromfield detailed her experience with cyberbullying in a lengthy note, writing,
“I have been getting cyber bullied for weeks and when it gets talked about I'm a liar because no Jamaican was coming for my features. I could go off ranting but I'm just here to tell all the girls/ women on my profile that you're beautiful no matter your shade, shape or size and for the the little black girls don't wait on anybody to tell you that your beautiful to believe it.”
Noah Lyles dropped by in the comments section with a note of encouragement that read,
“Baby you are and will always be an inspiration to all little girls feeling this exact way. I can't wait for the day that you tell your story in full because every girl that has felt what you are going through will know how amazing they can be and go on to do amazing things!”
While Junelle Bromfield may be facing hate on the internet, the Jamaican and Lyles are thriving in their real life. The duo recently went on a beachside vacation together and even walked the runway at a Dim Mak Collection X Steve Aoki fashion show.
