Christian Miller has vowed to bounce back after his Olympic dream hit rock bottom. The 18-year-old was hoping to make the U.S. Olympic team to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games but he failed to keep the pace at the Olympic trials.
Christian Miller was off to a great start at the U.S. Olympic trials, finishing fifth in 10.22 in the preliminaries of the men’s 100m. Going into the semifinal, Miller dug deep for a third-place finish in a time of 9.94.
Miller went into the final confident of a podium place following his semifinal exploits but he could only manage a fifth-place finish behind Christian Coleman. Miller clocked 9.98 to finish the race.
Team USA will now be represented by triple-world champion Noah Lyles, who equaled his personal best time of 9.83 to win the race. Kenny Bednarek clocked 9.87s to finish second, while Fred Kerley finished third with a time of 9.88, sealing their tickets to Paris.
Miller had his fingers crossed to be included in the relay pool but was left out as Coleman, who finished fourth, was added to the team.
Kyree King and Courtney Lindsey joined Coleman in the relay pool. King finished third in the 100m semifinal but did not compete in the final and he finished fifth in the 200m final of the race. Lindsey finished sixth in the final of the 100m and 200m.
Reacting after being dropped from the U.S. team to the Olympic Games, Miller fired warning shots and is taking the setback as a challenge. He shared a photo on his Instagram stories and captioned it:
"I’ll be back."
Coach Ricky Fields reacts after Christian Miller was dropped from men's 4x100m relay pool to Paris Olympic Games
Christian Miller’s coach Ricky Fields expressed disappointment after the 18-year-old was dropped from the American men’s 4x100m relay team to the Paris Olympic Games.
Miller was impressive in his run Olympic campaign where he finished an impressive fifth in the men’s 100m final. The 18-year-old was hoping to be selected for the relay team after missing the podium place but instead, it was Coleman, King, and Lindsey who made the team.
Miller’s coach took to his X handle to lash out his frustrations, noting that the explanation USATF gave was not satisfactory.
"Very disappointed in USATF @usatf by leaving Christian Miller off the 4x100 relay pool stating he didn’t have experience running 4x100 with pros and didn’t run in World relays which is limited to pros," Fields wrote.
Miller has been in good shape so far this season, claiming wins at the Pepsi Florida Relays and PURE Athletics Elite Invitational.
Miller also raced at the New Balance Nationals Outdoors, winning the preliminaries and semifinal but did not compete in the final. He is certainly an athlete to watch in the coming years after proving himself just at the age of 18.
