When the world was questioning Simone Biles’ withdrawal from several events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, pop icon Taylor Swift publicly expressed her support for the gymnastics icon. Coupled with words of encouragement was a heartwarming video that made the Olympic champion emotional.
Biles was highly favored to repeat the heroics from her Rio Olympics campaign in Tokyo. She was about to repeat that before ‘Twisties’ gripped her ahead of the event final. Biles lost her control mid-air during a vault routine, and fell on the mat, forcing her out of the competition.
Following her withdrawal, Biles received a lot of backlash, but many stood beside her. Before she returned for the balance beam final, where she later won the bronze medal, Taylor Swift expressed her support for Biles in an NBC video.
The video begins with Swift's ‘This is Me Trying’ while Biles’ vault routine, which she didn't complete, features in the background.
"What do we want from our heroes?" Swift asks. "What do we expect of them? What do we need from them? What happens when they surprise us?"
Swift then discussed Simone Biles’ incredible achievements and praised her personality:
"Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents. Her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that had long been her signature. But don't you see? It still is. She's perfectly human and that's what makes it so easy to call her a hero."
The popstar, in collaboration with NBC, was cheering on the fans to get behind the gymnast, probably in the toughest time of her career. After she came back with a medal, the 27-year-old expressed her gratitude to Swift for the heartwarming gesture.
Biles wrote in an X post:
"I’m crying how special. I love you @taylorswift13."
Swift then responded with more encouragement and support, and lauded Biles' ‘emotional intelligence and resilience as well’.
"I cried watching YOU. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you.", wrote Taylor Swift.
Simone Biles adds Taylor Swift song to her floor routine
Simone Biles featured in the first meet of her 2024 season at the U.S. Core Hydration Classic on May, 18. The 27-year-old cruised to the all-around podium dominantly, winning the event with a score of 59.5.
While her dominance was expected, what caught the attention of fans was the addition of Taylor Swift's 'Ready for it?' to her floor routine. Biles earlier showcased her Swift-themed floor routine during podium training on Friday, and she performed the same routine during the event on Saturday.
Simone Biles took the spotlight, with her dominant performance and Taylor Swift-themed floor routine, where she scored 14.800 for first place. She earned 14.550 on the balance beam, 14.550 on uneven bars, and a stunning 15.600 on vault.
