Simone Biles recently opened up about her marriage, Olympic mindset, and her reservations about her hair in an interview with Elle. One of the highlights of the conversation was her journey from feeling insecure to confident about her hair.
Biles is once again looking to make the US proud with her performance at the Paris Olympics. She has already delivered dominant wins in the 2024 season, including the Core Hydration Classic, where she won the all-around title after scoring a victorious 59.500. She also won gold in the floor exercise and silver medals in the uneven bars and balance beam.
Following this, the 27-year-old also excelled at the Xfinity US Championships and continued her dominance in the US Olympic Trials. Here, she earned the highest score of 117.225 points and punched her ticket to the Paris Olympics.
A few days after advancing to the Olympics, Biles sat for a Zoom interview with Elle, where she spoke about her hair. She has encountered a lot of criticism for not having her hair slicked, especially during her wedding.
Biles was always worried that her hair did not look 'professional.' However, she is now confident about her hair.
"I used to worry about my hair being considered not professional. But I'm not embarrassed about it anymore. Most of the backlash we get is from our own community, which is unfortunate. I don’t really care if my edges aren’t smooth," she said.
Simone Biles also revealed that her hairstylist Jazmine Johnson has helped her a lot by introducing her to K18 hair repair, which has made her damaged hair "silky, strong, and beautiful."
Simone Biles opens up about her husband's support
In the aforementioned interview, Simone Biles revealed that although she faced a lot of backlash for her hair, her husband Jonathan Owens always hyped her. She showed her braids in the interview and opened up about Owens' reaction to them.
"I got this (braids) done yesterday, and he said, 'Oh my gosh, I love it," Simone Biles said.
She added that the Chicago Bears safety gets his hair done regularly.
"He loves the smell of hair being straightened. He gets his hair braided every two weeks, so we're in a similar boat," she said.
Simone Biles spoke about her gymnastics hero as well. She said Aly Raisman and Kayla Ross are her inspirations, as they have guided her in several situations.
"I attribute a lot of my confidence to Aly Raisman," Simone Biles said. "She taught me to be beautiful behind the scenes and to embrace who I am without my makeup and hair done. She never cared and she made me not care as much. She taught me to feel beautiful in the skin that I am in. Kyla Ross was also big mentor for me. She guided me through World Championships and the Olympic Games. I’ll forever be grateful for her and the friendships that we have."
Simone Biles has already left for the French capital and will enter the Olympic venue as the gymnastics top seed, having produced dominant performances in the trials and the other competitions in 2024.
