In episode 3 of Simone Biles Rising, the American gymnast took a dig at her fans for criticizing Jonathan Owens for his controversial statement. The gymnast's season two of her Netflix docuseries was released on October 25, 2024.
Owens once made a bold statement about not knowing who the gymnast was in the podcast, 'The Pivot'. This irked a lot of fans who criticized the NFL player for saying "It's really how she pulled me, man," and then calling himself the 'catch'. Biles opened up about her husband facing backlash and warned her fans not to talk about her family.
In episode 3 of season two of her docuseries, Simone Biles said that the fans do not know how she and the other renowned faces function, and they do not understand the toll it takes on their mental health.
"Social media gives them this false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function. Most of the time, they don't understand the mental toll it takes, especially going into the Olympic year. I know we signes up to be judged in the gym, but when you guys are gonna talk about my him or my family, yeah, I'm gonna come at you guys," said Simone Biles
Along with the 27-year-old gymnast, Owens had also put forth his thoughts about this controversy and said that it was disrespectful of people to talk bad about their relationship behind their backs.
"Just how you wouldn't want someone, like, bad-talking your relationship behind your back. Like, it's just disrespectful. Like nobody.. you wouldn't do it to anyone else, you know, so, we're all human at the end of the day. Like regardless of what your job is, you wake up and brush your teeth the same way. You know, there's no differences. It's just your job and that it's televised," said Jonathan Owens.
Simone Biles' husband Jonathan Owens opened up about handling the backlash
In July 2024, Simone Biles' husband, Jonathan Owens, revealed how he handled the backlash after commenting about his and Biles' relationship. He revealed that he had all his social media notifications off, and all the hate comments were usually read by the gymnast and his mother. Owens said that he only spoke about something when things got out of hand.
"I have all my social media notifications off, so I didn’t even know for a while," Owens said. "I was actually with my mom and Simone whenever it came out, so, all the comments and everything, I just let them read it. I try to stay off of it, and obviously if you feel like stuff is kind of getting out of hand, that’s when you reach in and say something."
He also said that he did not care about what the trolls said:
“I don’t mean to cuss, but like, damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” he said. “If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something. So, just live your life. People are going to talk about you anyway, so you might as well do it the way you want to.”
Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens met each other on a dating app in 2020 and then got engaged in less than two years. The couple tied the knot in April 2023.
