The three-time Olympic gold medalist, Gabby Douglas, has suffered a serious injury to her ankle and has withdrawn from the Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships scheduled for this week. Reports suggest that the 28-year-old suffered the injury during her training programs.

The Virginia native returned to the mat at the American Classic last month after an eight-year hiatus from the discipline. Owing to her performances at the Classic and the Core Hydration Classic, Douglas qualified in three apparatuses (vault, balance beam, and bars) for the Gymnastics Championships, in which she was also looking to book her berth for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her hopes of making it to the upcoming Olympics are all but gone now that she will miss the championships and trials owing to the injury. However, the 28-year-old has stated that she will be aiming for the 2028 Home Olympics in Los Angeles.

The unfortunate news has left netizens feeling deeply disappointed and heartbroken. There have been numerous reactions on X (former Twitter) regarding Douglas' injury and her absence from the Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships.

One of the fans wrote:

"I'm literally crying at work," followed by two crying emojis.

"Such a shame. It would have been a great story to see Gabby have a successful return. I'm a big fan. Hopefully she can recover and compete next season" wrote another netizen.

A few other reactions regarding Douglas' injury include:

"Feel bad for Gabby. Her choice of making a comeback during the Olympic year wasn't a wise decision. She should have started last year like Simone. Wishing her all the best in the future" remarked a fan
"Ugh I feel so sad for her. I hope she has a speedy recovery and that she continues beyond Paris if she wants to. Us fans support her" wrote another fan.
"Dammit. She was the gymnast I was most excited to see compete this weekend. I really hope she continues with gymnastics. Get ready for next years Worlds" stated another fan.

With a bigger vision and aim, Gabby Douglas stepped on the mat after eight long years at the 2024 edition of the American Classic in Texas. She pulled off quite a decent performance as she earned qualification for the US Gymnastics Championships.

However, she faced immense difficulty during her second tournament. The 28-year-old fairly struggled in the uneven bars event, as she fell down twice and ultimately had to withdraw from the entire competition.
