Olivia Dunne expressed disappointment over TikTok going offline hours before the official ban. Dunne started her final season with Louisiana State University, utilizing her fifth-year eligibility with her alma mater.
Dunne, a part of the LSU gymnastics team that won its first National title at the 2024 NCAA Championships, boasts a social media career. Having joined TikTok in 2020, Dunne started with gymnastics videos but slowly documented other areas of her life as well. The following year, the newest Name, Image, and Likeliness update allowed NCAA athletes to monetize from their social presence.
Dunne achieved massive success over the years, showering herself with lucrative brand deals until becoming the most-followed NCAA athlete on social media with 8 million TikTok followers in 2023. Her popularity on social media soared so much that fans started flocking to watch her live at LSU meets.
Dunne, who once earned $500,000 from a single social media post, expressed disappointment over TikTok becoming unofficial hours before the official ban. She took to her Instagram story to show that the 'Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now' popped on her phone screen and wrote:
"I'm sad. time to get the LinkedIn ready"
The official message from TikTok also announced that Donald Trump will look into the matter once he takes office on January 20, 2025.
Dunne came fresh off her stint at the SEC season opener against the Florida Gators, taking the win 197.550-197.450 in a stadium with record fans.
Olivia Dunne once shared that she started social media just for fun
Olivia Dunne joined social media when she started her classes with LSU in the 2020-21 season. As she grew more popular with her social posts, the 22-year-old even got the opportunity to monetize her presence. In an interview with GQ Media in September 2024, Dunne revealed that the social media she started for fun, turned into a brand.
"I started social media just because it was fun and it developed into a brand. Now, I've really grown to love looking at the analytics—how things perform and when things don't perform, seeing what went wrong. I just find joy in that. I think you gotta love it if you're doing it, or else it could be kind of brutal. Social media in general is a tough place sometimes, but it's been really rewarding and fun to keep growing my own personal brand."
Olivia Dunne partnered with brands like Vuori, Grubhub, American Eagle Outfitters, Bodyarmor and others. She also became the swimsuit cover model of Sports Illustrated in 2023 and 2024.
