American professional boxer Jake Paul recently announced his intention to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
In a snippet from a podcast, Paul said [via Happy Punch on X]:
"I'm going to enter the 2028 Olympics for boxing in Los Angeles. I'm sick and tired of waiting around, waiting for another gold for Team USA, so not retiring. I definitely, probably just added a couple more years under my boxing career because of that, but Los Angeles, United States, sick as f***!"
In 2018, Paul played his lone amateur boxing match, which he won by a technical knockout. Two years later, he turned professional and gained huge popularity on both YouTube and Twitter [now X].
But why has Jake Paul decided to compete at the Olympics? Since the Rio Olympics, the USA, once known for producing quality boxers like Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Johnson, Claressa Shields, etc., has struggled to win even one medal.
For the first time in the history of Olympic boxing, the USA almost returned without a medal until Omari Jones won bronze in the welterweight category.
Jake Paul on Omari Jones' controversial loss in the semifinals at Paris Olympics 2024
Jake Paul has been unequivocal in his criticism of the Paris Olympics from the word go. From his criticism of the controversial loss of Angela Carini of Italy and Imane Khelif of Algeria in women's boxing to the controversial loss of Omari Jones in the semifinals, Paul has decided not to mince his words while hitting out at the boxing administration.
Jones faced Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev of Uzbekistan in the semifinals. It was a close contest and at no point did it seem that the American was the weaker boxer. However, the jury awarded the match to the Uzbek with a 3-2 verdict.
Jake Paul lashed out at the decision, labeling it 'absolute robbery.' He wrote on his X account, [via @jakepaul on X]:
"Absolute Robbery. Omari Jones won every round of that fight with ease. Can't believe boxing sometimes.....sh*ts a real shame!"
Jake Paul had lost to British boxer Tommy Fury in a similar situation. In 2023, despite an intense fight, the jury awarded the match to Fury in a split verdict. Paul gave training lessons to the boxers preparing for the Paris Olympics as an honorary coach last year.
The last time the USA won an Olympic gold medal in boxing was in Athens in 2004, when Andre Ward won the gold medal in the light heavyweight category. Claressa Shields was the last female boxer from the USA to win an Olympic gold medal. She won it at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
