Mondo Duplantis said that he still had a few tournaments to compete in 2024. The Swede recently broke his own world record for the tenth time at the Silesia Diamond League, clearing an impressive 6.26m, thus bettered the effort of 6.25m that earned him the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Mondo Duplantis, widely considered the most decorated pole vaulter in history, returned to the Diamond League series in Lausanne after his Paris Olympic success, winning after clearing a distance of 6.15m.
Duplantis' next Diamond League stop was in Poland, where he soared to an astounding height of 6.26m on his second attempt. This marked the tenth time the 24-year-old broke his own world record. In an interview with CITIUS Mag, the reigning world and European champion expressed his desire to take more wins this season.
"It was a great season and I still have a couple more competitions left. But no matter what, it’s been a really great season — one that’s going to be hard to top," he said. (via X post of CITIUS Mag)
In a post-race interview, Duplantis said that his sole focus was the Paris Olympics and the world records just naturally followed because of his form.
"This year I focused on the Olympics, the record just came naturally because I was in good shape. So I am not surprised with the record today, but I am thankful,” Duplantis said. (via Reuters)
Despite a poor first effort, he impressed the Polish crowd by raising the height and clearing the world record mark in the next attempt. After his historic feat, Mondo Duplantis appreciated the energy he received from the crowd whenever he competed, especially from Poland.
"It almost feels weird and unnatural to get so much love and support from the crowds when I compete. I see that especially in Poland. The energy in this stadium just keeps getting better every year. My first world record also came in Poland, indoors in Torun (in 2020), so I have great memories from here," Duplantis added.
Mondo Duplantis' girlfriend Desire Inglander congratulated him on his world record over video call
Since Mondo Duplantis' girlfriend Desire Ingalnder was not present to watch the world record feat in person, she was present to congratulate the pole vaulter over a video call. In an Instagram post, she shared a glimpse of the video call, where the couple was seen blowing kisses with the screen flashing the world record time in Duplantis' background.
"10th time and still counting❤️ @mondo_duplantis," her caption read.
The Louisiana native's next Diamond League stop is in Zurich, where he will compete against 400m hurdler Karsten Warholm in the 100m in a friendly contention.
