Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce recently recalled her meeting with rugby player Michaela Blyde at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Notably, Blyde has been a fan of the Jamaican sprinting legend for a long time and had a chance to meet her idol at the Olympics.
In her final Olympic Games, Fraser-Pryce competed in the women’s 100m, finishing second in Heat 8 (10.92s) to qualify for the semis. However, she couldn’t accomplish a podium finish in Paris after she withdrew from the semis after sustaining an injury during the warmups, which was confirmed by the head of the Jamaican team, Ian Kelly. Owing to this, the sprinting icon concluded her remarkable journey at the Olympic Games with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze.

“That was such a touching moment for me. I was trying to keep a low profile, and it wasn’t low at all. But when I met her, just her presence and how she spoke of me really put things in perspective for me as an athlete. Michaela Blyde first spotted Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Paris Olympics Village while sitting with her team in the athletes' canteen. One of her teammates captured the moment on camera as Blyde was seen wiping her eyes. Blyde went on to share this video on Instagram, captioning it:
“I saw royalty. @realshellyannfp please be my friend”
The 10-time world champion then followed Blyde on the social media platform. Their conversation on the app, with help from Blyde's friends, led to the meeting between her and Fraser-Pryce at the Olympic Village. After Fraser-Pryce invited Blyde to meet her, the New Zealand athlete was caught on camera running barefoot to greet her.
