Jakob Ingebrigtsen is brimming with confidence after shattering the men’s 3000m world record at the 2024 Silesia Diamond League. Ingebrigtsen accomplished the feat by recording a time of 7:17.55 in the 12th Diamond League meet of the 2024 season.
With this, Ingebrigtsen broke a long-standing 28-year-old record previously held by Daniel Komen of Kenya, who had clocked a time of 7:20.67 in 1996. The 23-year-old ran more than 3 seconds quicker than the previous world record.
After breaking the world record, the two-time Olympic gold medalist shared his emotions on the achievement during the post-event interview. He said:
“It feels special, amazing. I was hoping to challenge the world record here, but based on my training, I can never predict exactly what kind of time I am capable of. I would not have imagined I could run 7:17, though.”
He also spoke about how the race went:
“At the beginning, the pace felt really fast, but then I started to feel my way into the race and found a good rhythm. 3000 is a tough distance. After 4-5 laps you feel the lactic acid, but you need to get going. The conditions were difficult with the heat today, but it is the same for everyone.”
Jakob Ingebrigtsen also acknowledged his team’s contributions in his preparation and also praised the Silesia Diamond League event organizers.
“I have a good team. We use ice vests, we make sure I stay hydrated and I am prepared. This meeting is great. The organizers make sure we feel appreciated and are comfortable and that really allows us to perform.”
He concluded by expressing his confidence, adding that he now aims to break world records in other distances.
“Now I want to challenge world records at all distances, but it is one step at a time,” Ingebrigtsen said.
