Gabby Thomas has expressed her desire to take a break from sprinting after competing in her final meet of the season at the inaugural event of Athlos NYC. It will conclude a memorable season for the Harvard graduate, who won three gold medals in Paris.
After winning silver in the 200m at the world championships last year, Thomas started her season in February 2024, racing the 300m short track at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. She went on to win multiple medals at the World Athletic Relays Championship before winning the 200m title at the US Olympic Trials in a blistering 21.81s.
The 28-year-old had finished third at the Tokyo Olymics. In Paris, it turned out to be a walk in the park for Thomas, who won the gold medal in 21.83s. In the following days, she won more gold in the women's 4x400m relay and 4x100m relay.
Gabby Thomas shared a fun video on her Tiktok handle, clarifying how the track season didn't end with the Olympics. While multiple Diamond League meets have taken place over the last few weeks, a few more are still pending, although Thomas won't be competing in any of them. She will directly race at the inaugural meet of Athlos NYC on September 26. But following that, the Olympic gold medalist hopes to take a break for two months.
"SEPTEMBER 26 IN NYC will be my last meet!!! Then I don’t want to see another track for two months," she wrote.
Athlos NYC is a female-only track event organized by Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian and Thomas was the first athlete to sign and promote the league. While the rest of the sprinters for the races haven't been announced yet, some big names are expected to try out the new league handing out prizes higher than what Olympic gold medalists get from World Athletics.
“I'm telling myself that I'm already the Olympic champion"- Gabby Thomas on preparing for the Olympic Games
Gabby Thomas had been winning for many years before the Paris Olympics but what she was missing was an individual title in the 200m. She changed that at the Stade de France.
The 27-year-old had been telling herself and writing it in her notes all the time that she would be the Olympic champion and she eventually won not one, but three gold medals.
"I am building my self-talk. I'm building my confidence in that moment. I am telling myself that I am already the Olympic champion. I wrote down over and over every morning, while I was in Paris, that I will be the Olympic champion - in my notes app - over and over and I envisioned the race all day, every day, imagining myself winning and crossing the line in front." With three gold medals to her name, Thomas has already etched her name in the history books. She nonetheless will be looking to win more at the LA 2028 Olympics.
