Alica Schmidt endured a hot training day in South Africa as she continued her preparations for the upcoming track and field season. The German runner is planning to compete in 800m and 600m events instead of the regular 400m.
Schmidt shared a series of pictures from the training session on her Instagram story on Thursday and could be seen making strong runs on the track with other athletes.
The 26-year-old was sweating and noted it was a hot day in the African country.
"Hot day at the office," she wrote.
The Olympic runner cooled down with a drink afterward as she shared a selfie in the light pink-colored track uniform.
The session marks Schmidt's first training camp of the season, and with freezing temperatures in Germany, she chose the African country to finalize her preparations for the 2025 indoor season. The 26-year-old will compete predominantly in the 800m and 600m events after having run the 400m for nearly all of her career.
She ran the events once each following the 2024 Paris Olympics and clocked lifetime best records of 1:24.88 and 2:04.22 in the 600m and 800m respectively.
"I couldn’t manage to stand up for 30min" - Alica Schmidt after 'one of the hardest' workout sessions in South Africa
Alica Schmidt flew off to South Africa for the training camp in the first week of the year but fell ill following her flight. The German athlete delayed the start of her camp and is now finding it tough to adjust to the intense training.
The 26-year-old said she had gone through one of the hardest workout sessions of her life on Tuesday and was unable to stand up for a whole 30 minutes after it. However, she wasn't complaining, adding that she looked forward to the next session.
"Late night lactic sessions ✨ actually today was one of the hardest workouts ever, I couldn’t manage to stand up for 30min 🫠 but that‘s part of the game and I can’t wait for the next one on Saturday 🫡," she wrote.
The European U20 Championship silver medalist made her Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics and competed in the women's and mixed 4x400m relays. The German team finished seventh in both events and didn't win any medals. Schmidt was part of the German relay teams at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well but didn't get a chance to compete.
