Leanne Wong is heading to the Olympics as a traveling alternate after qualifying for the Games for the second time. The Florida Gators athlete celebrated with her Gators' coach at the Olympic 'Prep Camp' before taking flight for the highly anticipated Summer Games.
Leanne Wong, 20, swept the all-around silver at the 2021 World Championships. She was also part of the gold-winning teams at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. Her resume encompasses several other podium finishes earned at the US Championships, Hydration Core Classic, and Pan American Games, among others.
Wong was part of the gymnastic women's roster at the 2024 Olympic Trials. After a couple of wobbly performances on Day 1, she improved her score on Day 2, especially on the balance beam, floor, and vault. Her vault score of 14.50 marked the third-highest of the night. She earned all-around seventh with a score of 110.425 and booked her ticket to Paris as a traveling alternate.
In an Instagram post by Owen Field, the coach in his 10th season with the Florida Gators, Leanne Wong sported a funky pair of sunglasses to conclude her 'OLY Prep Camp' as the Gators coach nodded to her Paris Olympic journey, slated to kick off in a few days.
"OLY Prep Camp, Next stop, Paris!" the caption read.
In the first photo, the coach-tutee duo beamed with happiness and Field proudly pointed at Wong for booking her ticket to the Olympics. In the next picture, both pointed at Field's white pair of shoes.
Leanne Wong has juggled elite and NCAA like a pro since 2022 after signing the National Letter of Intent with the Gators in 2020 for the school year starting in 2021-22.
Her list of achievements also includes silver medals in the team and floor exercise at the 2023 NCAA Championships and all-around and vault at the 2024 NCAA Championships. She also won the uneven bars gold in the latter event.
Leanne Wong - "I think that really gave me time to think about what I wanted"
Leanne Wong made her World Championships debut in 2021, where she earned the all-around silver and bronze in the floor exercise. But prior to her return to the elite mat, hours of contemplation were involved. Her teammate and fellow alternate Kara Eaker tested positive during the Tokyo Olympics, leaving both quarantined in the same room.
She then decided to go back to elite gymnastics and mark her world debut.
"After the last Olympics and getting quarantined and then just being stuck in my hotel room, I think that really gave me time to think about what I wanted to do after that. That’s why I decided to go back to elite gymnastics after that and go to my first worlds," Wong told Olympics.com.
Leanne Wong will be joined by Joscelyn Roberson as the traveling alternates at the Paris Olympics.
