Michael Phelps was spotted on a date night with his wife Nicole Phelps as the couple attended the Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA clash courtside. The swimming legend married Nicole shortly before retiring from the sport in 2016, and they are now the parents to four children, all boys.
Phelps met Nicole at the 2007 ESPY Awards when the model was assigned to be his escort at the event. While the two hit it off instantly, they dated on and off before splitting up for the final time in 2011. They got back together in 2014 before getting engaged in February 2015.
The 23-time Olympic gold medalist later held three wedding ceremonies with Nicole in the same year in 2015. The couple got married for the first time in June 2016 before the start of the Rio Olympics and later held two more separate ceremonies on October 29 and New Year's eve of that year for family and friends.
More than eight years into their marriage, Phelps and Nicole are still in love and recently strolled out for a 'date night'. The couple attended the Phoenix Suns' game against the Dallas Mavericks courtside, with both rocking jeans and black tops.
Phelps also posted a 'who's got better' shoe poll on his Instagram stories, but the response from fans was clearly in favor of the 2010 Miss California.
"We've always seen it as 'If it's meant to be, it's meant to be'"- Michael Phelps on his on-and-off relationship with Nicole Phelps before their marriage
Before getting back together in 2014, Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole Phelps tried getting back together twice in 2013 but it didn't work out. However, they also weren't able to imagine themselves with someone else during their separation, leading to their eventual reunion.
Speaking during an interview with Brides magazine in 2022, Nicole said:
"We came back together a few times. In 2013, I said, 'You know, you’re not ready for it. You should go have fun.' It always came back to my question of 'What if?' with Michael. I could never see myself with anyone else. There’s nobody else that gets me the way that Michael does."
Michael added:
"For me, it was 'What if I never had a chance to actually tell her how I felt?' The only thing that I could do was just say that, and we got back together. We’re joking around constantly. We’ve always seen it as 'If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.' And I guess it’s meant to be."
The 28-time Olympic medalist has credited Nicole for helping her get through tough times and helping him in his mental health journey.
