Mikaela Shiffrin is the most successful skier of all time. In late 2024, the American suffered a horror crash on the slopes of Killington, and she is now preparing for her first World Cup race since the accident. Recently, the skier gave fans a glimpse into her gym training sessions as she gears up to race at Courchevel.
Shiffrin had begun her 2024-2025 season in the hunt to become the first skier in history to win 100 World Cup races. While her season got off to a lukewarm start in Soelden, she quickly recovered, claiming her career’s 98th and 99th wins at the Levi and Gurgl stops.
The 29-year-old then arrived in Killington with the opportunity to win her 100th World Cup race on home ground. However, in her second run of the race, Shiffrin suffered a major crash, which resulted in a puncture wound that required surgery.
The skier has since been out of action, but announced on Friday, January 24, that she would return to racing at the Courchevel World Cup later this month. Recently, Mikaela Shiffrin took to Instagram to give fans glimpses of her gym sessions as she prepares for her return, writing:
“Gym things (soon -> ski things).”
Mikaela Shiffrin discusses her return to competition
While Mikaela Shiffrin will return to the World Cup circuit on January 30, the American revealed that she hasn't fully recovered from her injury.
Speaking to Ski Racing Media, she explained that she would need to continue working on her recovery.
“The next step is returning to competition, that doesn’t actually mean I’m 100% recovered. We’ll need to continue working on healing and in particular scarring and increased tightness for a while,” she said.
She added that she was getting her technique back, but was more focused on enjoying being able to race.
“The most helpful thing to me psychologically is to get as much repetition in gates as possible. The technique and timing are coming back with each run I take. This is kind of a case of not overthinking it but just enjoying being able to step into a race start again. Any other athlete with a season-ending injury would choose 100% of the time to be in the position to return same-season,” she added.
At the Courchevel World Cup on January 30, Mikaela Shiffrin will compete in the night slalom, returning to racing exactly 60 days after her crash. After Courchevel, the American is scheduled to race at the World Championships in Saalbach in February.
