Mikaela Shiffrin shared glimpses of her training sessions as she geared up for the upcoming event in the Alpine Skiing season in Levi, Finland. The American skier made her first appearance of the season at the World Cup opener in Sölden, Austria, on October 26, 2024.
Shiffrin missed out on the podium positions and finished fifth overall in the first race of her season. Federica Brignone won the World Cup opener and became the oldest woman to win an Alpine skiing World Cup event at 34. Mikaela Shiffrin spoke about her performance in a post-race interview and revealed that she struggled with timing her attempt, which ultimately slowed down her performance.
“I’m just happy to be here. If I miss the timing, then I’m just kind of fighting against the tracks the whole way down. This hill, if you are fighting it, then it is so slow," said the 29-year-old
With a positive mindset, Shiffrin marched on to the next event of the Alpine Skiing season. She reached Levi, Finland, a week before the event, which is scheduled to take place on November 16–17, 2024.
The 29-year-old took to Instagram to share glimpses of her training sessions as she geared up to compete in the World Cup, aiming for the 98th win of her career.
Mikaela Shiffrin on making a change after a major setback in the previous season
Mikaela Shiffrin faced a major setback in the previous Alpine skiing season after she suffered a devastating crash while skiing downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The impact of the crash was such that it led her to skip multiple races and undergo rehabilitation. She made a comeback at the World Cup in Are, Sweden.
The American spoke about her crash in the previous season and made a major change in the 2024/25 Alpine skiing season.
"Juggling training for every discipline is always a struggle," she said. "GS is always a priority but I love super-G and downhill - they feed my soul. But it came to a head in Cortina. I had not had a single day," she said.
She added,
"We had to reevaluate after Cortina and say, 'What are we doing here that is potentially setting me up for a little bit of failure?' One of those things is trying to juggle every event. At some point, we end up sacrificing quality."
Furthermore, after re-evaluation and consideration with her team, Shiffrin revealed that she won't be participating in downhill skiing in the season.
