Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand Mondo Duplantis recently featured in Vogue's Scandinavian edition with his long-time girlfriend Desire Inglander. The couple made their debut in the magazine with dazzling pictures and also shared anecdotes from their first meet-up.
Mondo Duplantis is a 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and a two-time world champion. The pole vaulter currently holds the world record in both indoor and outdoor championships, boasting 6.24 meters and 6.22 meters, respectively. To maintain his strings of victories, Duplantis is now preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 in July, which will be the second Olympic experience of his career.
Ahead of the big championship, Mondo Duplantis posed for his Vogue debut with his girlfriend of three years, Desire Inglander, a Swedish model and social media personality. He shared stunning pictures of Desire and himself on his Instagram handle, in collaboration with Vogue Scandinavia.
Mondo Duplantis and Desire Inglander shared details from their first meeting in 2020
While talking to Vogue, the couple revealed details about how they got along together. Inglander shared that she was “very single and not ready to mingle” when she met Duplantis at a Midsummer party in 2020 in Stockholm. However, the then-high school graduate received attention from the pole vaulter at the party.
Remembering their first meet, Duplantis continued,
“The problem was, people flirt in a very different way in Sweden than where I’m from,” he says.“[Where I’m from] there’s a lot more talking – you talk for a long time. So at the party, I was just trying to talk to Desiré, like ‘Hey, what’s up, I’m Mondo...’ but she didn’t want anything to do with it or me. She just wanted to dance.”
Sadly, his attempts to woo Desire did not work effectively. But he did manage to get her Snapchat handle. Duplantis’s relentless attempts to take Inglander on a date did not work. His girlfriend explained to Vogue,
“I was 19, I’d never been on a date and I couldn’t imagine anything worse than eating with a person that I didn’t know. And in English,”
At last, the athlete attempted once again and texted the Swedish model,
“I just sent her a message more or less saying, ‘I leave in a few weeks for the United States. Let me take you on a date. Just say yes’.”
On February 12, 2024, the couple celebrated their third anniversary.
