Junelle Bromfield credits Noah Lyles after bouncing back to winning ways and sealing Olympic ticket
Junelle Bromfield has admitted that Noah Lyles played an integral part in her bounce back to sealing the 400m Olympic ticket to the Paris Olympic Games.
The 26-year-old opened up about her struggles with survivor’s guilt after losing some of her family members, including her mum, and was slowly losing interest in the sport. However, Lyles recommended therapy which has worked for Bromfield as she sought to regain her potential as an epic 400m runner.
In an interview with the Inside Lane, Bromfield said:
"Honestly, it means a lot because it feels as if a burden has been lifted off my shoulders. For the past couple of years, it's been very hard mentally because I've had a loss in my family, and I'm just recovering."
"I started therapy like two years ago because my boyfriend (Lyles) is big on therapy and he felt as if I needed it too. And, honestly, it has helped a lot because I feel as if I've been suffering from survivor’s guilt and it was basically laying on my shoulders," she added.
As she heads to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Bromfield will be looking to build on her momentum with eyes on a podium finish.
She rounded up the podium at the Jamaican Olympic trials to directly qualify for the Games. The 400m maestro clocked a personal best time of 51.24 for her third-place finish behind Nickisha Pryce (50.01) and Stacey Ann Williams (50.56).
Bromfield will make her Olympic debut in an individual event in Paris after being a vital part of the women’s 4x400m relay team and the mixed relay at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The women’s 4x400m relay team saw the Jamaicans win a silver medal while they managed bronze in the mixed relay.
On his part, Noah Lyles was dominant at the U.S. Olympic trials, unleashing beastly runs in the 100m and 200m. He was in a class of his own as he reigned supreme in the men’s 100m, equaling his personal best time of 9.83 as Kenny Bednarek (9.87) and Fred Kerley (9.88) finished second and third.
In the 200m, Lyles meant business and achieved a world-leading time, shattering Michael Johnson’s 28-year-old meet record as he cut the tape in 19.53. Bednarek clocked a personal best time of 19.59 as wunderkind Erriyon Knighton rounded up the podium in 19.77.
